gPodder Bug Tracker – Bug 1129
Cannot change download folder on Windows
Last modified: 2018-10-10 13:37:35 BST
I opened the GUI preferences, and changed some of the selections. I closed the window, and none of the changes were there when I opened the preferences and looked again.
I opened the config/gpodder.conf file and made some changes there (eg. changed the folder pathname where the podcasts are saved to) and saved it. When I reopened gPodder and downloaded some podcasts, they saved to the original folder, my changes did not stick. I restarted the computer, and restarted gPodder, and looked again at the gpodder.conf and the changes there have been reverted.
I am using Windows XP.
gPodder for Windows works in "portable mode" - it will always use the download folder inside the application folder. If you want to move the downloads, simply move the application folder as well.

So, there is no way to change the preferences? That's not the only preference item I wanted to change the value of.
I don't consider moving the application folder to be much of a solution. I would like to leave the application folder in the Programs folder with the other programs.

You can change all preferences, and they will be saved (in gpodder.conf in the config folder), but the download_dir preference will be overwritten on every start.
If you really want to change the download folder, you can do so by editing the file "launcher.py" and replacing the line that says:
os.environ['GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR'] = download_dir
with, for example:
os.environ['GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR'] = "d:\\gpodder-downloads"
This is the workaround for now. Do you think we should add an option to run gPodder in non-portable mode on Windows or are you okay with the workaround described here?
I would like a non-portable mode version for windows.(or a portable mode where this option works)
At the very least this option should be removed from the config in portable mode, that way there will be less confusion.
This workaround allows you to set the download directory via the EDIT CONFIG button in the PREFERENCES window: simply convert lines 77 and 78 in launch.py into comments with the #, like so:
# download_dir = os.path.join(os.getcwd(), 'downloads')
# os.environ['GPODDER_DOWNLOAD_DIR'] = download_dir
You can now change the download directory from the gpodder user interface and the change will be saved in \config\gpodder.conf.
BTW: the launch.py file is located in \lib\site-packages\gpodder\

Sorry - not launch.py, but launcher.py, naturally.
Could you guys make it easy to change the download directory in gPodder in Windows?
Why is this such a problem, almost every software has this function.
